We headed out last Saturday for our 9 day vacation to the mountains, to Red River New Mexico. We divided it up into two days of driving. This is the craziness that we dealt with in the car the first day! We arrived in Amarillo around 7pm on Saturday evening and went to dinner and then headed to the hotel for the evening. We let the kids swim and then headed to bed.
Palin insisted on wearing her sunglasses and carrying her purse, taking her weenie dog and carrying her own makeup whereever we went the first couple of days. This girl dances to the beat of her own drum.
The next morning we ate breakfast at the hotel and headed out to get on the road. Once into New Mexico we started seeing signs for Capulin Volcano and if you have ever travelled with Cash you know that sparked 10,000 questions for Toby about Volcanoes and what they were, how they worked, why they worked. At this point I was glad that Cash was in the front seat with Toby and I was in the back seat with Palin. Toby did not have an answer for everything, and he said Cash why dont we just go look at it, Cash lit up and was so excited!!
It was just a minor detour off the highway for us and the kids were so excited. We stopped at the entrance and took pictures, and were able to use my little camera some on this trip when we wanted a family picture, using the timer on the camera to allow us some family pictures on the trip.
Once you checked in at the park rangers office and paid your $5 dollar you were permitted to drive to the top of the volcano. When we checked in they gave each kid a ranger book of things that they had to look for and read about with activities. If they completed 4 fo them before we got back down the volcano and turned it in they would get ranger badges.
The kids were excited about had a blast at the top of it completing their books. When we got done on the volcano, we headed down and turned their books in. They were sworn in as junior park rangers.
They each recieved a badge, and certificate that they were now junior rangers. They felt proud.
They quickly saw ranger hats that they wanted to pin their badges on. So they convinced me that they needed them and talked me into buying them for them to place their badges on. They wore their hats the rest of the day.
We arrived in Red River around 4pm on Sunday afternoon and let them go to the park and play since they had been in the car all day. They were excited to get a little freedom.
The park had out door excerise euipment and Cash thought that it was entertaining to play on. That night Toby and Cash played outside our house that we were staying in with sling shots and rocks before heading to bed.
